I believe this is going to be a great change in the lives of everyone in my family. I am a father of 8 children and we all depend on the stream water, not treated and we have been having health problems, which most of it is related to water contamination. My Dad went to the farm and I just want to say that I personally is very happy to see this filter in our house. I have been diarrhoea several times and I believe that it will end once I start drinking from this filter. My elder brothers and sisters always complain also of having stomach problems. Thank you

We are a young couple and really, starting our home with this filter shows how healthy our children will be. We stay with my two cousins and I believe they will all enjoy this filter. We also have a store, a drinking spot where people in the community come and drink their beer, buy their household commodities and the filter will for sure save hundreds of lives in this community through our store and bar. Because of you who do not even know us or where we are, we will have clean drinking water. I am an old woman and have children and grand children. My grand child died last month from an unknown illness, but I put everything into God’s hands. It is true that we are a family without children, but really we are very happy to have this filter and that it is going to change our lives by improving our health. I have been longing to see this happen in my house and for my family, just like it has been happening in other households. There is so much joy in my heart. My children are all in the farm at the moment and some in schools in Kumbo, some in the University in Yaounde and Buea. They all will enjoy this filter and will be happy to see it when they return.

I killed and cooked full chicken for the technicians to eat because I believe I was celebrating the coming of this filter (Doctor) into my family.

Let me first start by thanking you for thinking about us here in this jungle. As you can see, I have three children and the last younger one who is just some months is in the room making my children to four in number. We also have my junior sister who has a 3 months baby living with us including my husband and you will agree with me that this filter is like our saviour, because with the water diseases problems I have always had in this house, it has not always been easy for us. But now I am confident that with this filter, my children will have good health.

I’m a father of four children, my wife and myself with one of my in-law staying with us. I have just constructed my new house and it is where my own filter is being constructed. We will be moving in before the 15 of April 2008, and we are happy to have the sand filter first thing into our new house.

We are now very close to the stream and it will make it easier for us to have clean water always.

This is something we have never seen in our community, projects are rarely implemented in our community and this is the very first one that we are having or witnessing. I am already a grandmother and have many children and grand children now. The little and the big ones and all depend on the untreated water we are drinking here. With this filter, I believe their health will improve and they will not have the stomach problems they have been having in the past.

I lost my husband 20 years ago and I wish was here to see this great gift that is coming to our community and our house. May God bless you and keep my husband safe where ever he is.

As a father, I have always tried my best to boil drinking water for my children when they were under the ages of 5, but right now they are grown up and at times it is not easy boiling water all the times, and so it is not practical often and I strongly believe that with these filters, I won’t need to boil the water again. My children and I are very grateful having this sand filter. The rest of my children are presently in Kumbo under going their studies and come here every weekend. It is going to be very useful to us and we will keep as clean as required. We drink untreated water everyday and my children have been having so many stomach problems, and now I believe this is going to solve the problem.

Thirst Relief and The Water Project: Cameroon

The Water Project is partnering with Thirst Relief International to supply biosand water filters to villages and neighborhoods as part of Thirst Relief's larger mission in Cameroon.

Our goal is to connect you to these villages through this blog. We'll be in regular contact with aid workers in the villages we're supporting as the project unfolds. Project Details:

The Cameroon Water Project seeks to address the clean water needs of the rural population of Cameroon. Even within the capital city of Yaounde and the other major cities of Cameroon, the water that flows from the tap is dirty and contaminated at times. As a result, the long-term vision of the Cameroon Water Project is to introduce the BioSand filters to those in need nationwide.

The first target area for this water project is the village of Nkuv nestled in a remote location in the northwest portion of the country (a 4 hour trek from Kumbo, the closest city). For this community of some 1,500 inhabitants, there is no access to clean drinking water, electricity, good roads, or health clinics. The Nkuv villagers take their drinking water source from the muddy tributary rivers in the region, which are a 20 to 30 minute walking distance from their homes. These same rivers are used to wash clothes and water their livestock. Although these rivers are vital to the existence of the Nkuv community, they are also source of disease and sickness. As most families do not boil the river water before drinking, water-related sickness and disease is common among the children between 1 and 10 years old. The distribution of BioSand filters will serve to greatly reduce water-related illness and disease among the Nkuv population.

The Cameroon Water Project is implemented at the point of need through a partnership with the Life & Water Development Group – Cameroon (LWDGC) based out of Yaounde, Cameroon. The cost to build, distribute, and install a BioSand water filter is $50, which in turn benefits 10 people in need on average. The Cameroon Water Project has resources/infrastructure ready and waiting to implement 30 BioSand filters per month.

I am very happy about the filter because it has come to relieve me and my family from the sufferings that the dirty water has always caused to us. To me, I think this is the solution to the first problem that of poor health. I hope that in years to come, the donors (filter donors) will also assist us in solving another problem, which is the bad nature of the Nkuv road from Kumbo.
